Groups of Figures

Having suffered a couple of setbacks recently I am now feeling a sense of urgency to finish this course, one way or another! Trying not to overthink things and avoid creating obstacles I am just going to keep going, one foot in front of the other, no matter how slow the progress and deal with whatever comes along.

As I couldn’t think of anywhere to go to do this I thought I would look online for inspiration and found some stock photographs of people.

I started off by drawing a group of people:

I was aiming for a quick impression of people standing around. Nothing too detailed, not too exciting, just some basic gestures to represent people. There were no shadows though and I forgot to add any so they do look like they are floating a little.

On my second attempt I thought it would be more interesting to see people interacting, in action so to speak:

This represents a simple scene, a little more interesting but scant detail.

Attempting  a larger scene with more people was definitely more challenging:

I don’t really enjoy drawing this kind of a scene, there is so much information I’m unsure what to focus on. It really could be anything so I spent a little more time on it, trying to give some more details:

This works a little better. I definitely need to work on my observation skills as there is no way I would remember this scene. I would need to make notes, perhaps make a colour swatche and take a lot of photos, maybe even video would help and work from those at home.

Louise, I think we all reach this point on Drawing1 – its such a slog! Keep going, its a test of will power and stamina! I am certainly finding Exploring Drawing Media not nearly so endless. Not sure about POP1 – it might offer the same tests of determination from what I hear!
